The Silent Hymn of The Hills

divider

Coffee Grove Resort is located in the Malenadu region, the 'Land of Hills.' This is not just a label; it defines how this region lives. The culture, the cuisine, and the rhythm of life here are all sculpted by the lush green slopes and the monsoons that sweep in from the coast. The earth is deep red and fragrant, supporting a dense tapestry of coffee, pepper vines, rice paddy, and arecanut.

The resort sits on the quiet side of Chikmagalur. We are located in the transition zone where the tame, manicured lines of the coffee bushes meet the wild, tangled shola forests of the hills. It is a terrain of contrasts—the orderly calm of the estate against the rugged, wind-swept drama of the higher peaks.

Life here follows the routines of plantation country: peaceful walks through the coffee estate, cycling trails inside the plantation, time at the swimming pool, an elevated sky-tower for views across the plantations, a dedicated games zone, a functional gym area, a rain-dance area, and a bonfire space that guests use after sundown. The restaurant anchors the day with Malnad dishes alongside other familiar cuisines, and the indoor hall supports small gatherings and corporate events.

The Location

Chikmagalur is a sea of rolling green, characterized by high-altitude grasslands and dense tropical folds. Our resort is tucked away in Kelagur, a village far from the town’s noise, sitting at an elevation where the air is perpetually crisp. The landscape here is intimate and enveloping; the hills rise gently around you, creating a natural amphitheatre of green that feels both protective and vast.

The People

The people of these hills possess a quiet, earthy resilience. Communities here have lived in harmony with the hills and forest for centuries, their lives entwined with the harvest cycles. There is a gentle, unhurried nature to the locals—a hospitality that is less about service and more about sharing. It is a culture where a guest is welcomed with warmth and simple, genuine care, reflecting the tight-knit bonds of village life.

The Culture

The cultural heritage of Chikmagalur is a blend of the indigenous and the colonial. It is the sound of folk songs drifting across the paddy fields, the worship of nature spirits, and the enduring legacy of the coffee estates. The culture is syncretic and spiritual, visible in the ancient hilltop shrines that draw pilgrims of all faiths. It is a society that celebrates the rain, respects the tiger, and finds divinity in the landscape itself.

Malnad's kitchens celebrate hill country traditions with earthy ingredients transformed through fire and spice into meals that are comforting like home, honest and deeply satisfying.

Malnad's cuisine reflects its landscape—simple, spicy, and deeply comforting. Our kitchen brings these local flavours to the forefront. This is food designed to ward off the damp chill of the hills, utilizing ingredients like bamboo shoots, wild mushrooms, and the distinct, smoky heat of black pepper.

Meals in Malnad are an exploration of texture and taste. Akki Rotti, crisp from the fire, served with a curry rich in coconut and spices, or the delicate sweetness of Halbai, a sweet made from rice and coconut. The local cuisine here offers honest, unpretentious cooking that nourishes the body and grounds the soul. To accommodate every palate, our restaurant also offers an extensive menu comprising South Indian, North Indian, and Chinese dishes.
